Organic Cotton Booming

A recent report from the Organic Exchange shows organic cotton retail sales are booming.  In 2006 retail sales of organic cotton products reached $1.1 billion globally, an 85% rise from 2005 numbers.  There is a similar spike in 2007 with global organic cotton sales reaching nearly $2.0 billion, up 83% from 2006.  That’s a lot of cotton.  Holy Cow has heard you loud and clear and we’re excited to share our great new line this Spring.

From Field to Fabric

We can break the process from cotton field to fabric in to 4 steps: 1) Growing, 2) Harvesting, 3) Cleaning or “ginning” and 4) Manufacturing.

Step 1) Growing.

Although cotton is grown on just 2.4% of the world’s arable land, it accounts for 24% of the world’s insecticides, making it the most pesticide-intensive crop on the planet. Not only do these insecticides kill “harmful” creatures, they ravish beneficial instincts as well, including ladybugs and wasps.
